5 Common Istanbul Airport Taxi Scams

1. Rigged or Tampered Meter

Some taxis appear to run the meter, but it has been set to count faster than normal. On the 20 July 2026 tariff the opening fare is 71.94 TL and each kilometre costs 47.92 TL, so 42 km to Taksim comes to about 2,085 TL without traffic. If the display shows far more than that, the meter may be rigged. Waiting in traffic is added on top.

Protection: Check that the meter is switched on before you set off and watch the amount during the ride. The safest option is to pre-book a transfer; with Merry the price is written in your booking confirmation.

2. Longer Route / "Traffic" Excuse

The driver says "there is traffic" and leaves the motorway for a longer road. If a 42 km trip becomes 65 km, for example, the meter shows about 3,187 TL instead of about 2,085 TL without traffic.

Protection: Open Google Maps and watch the route live. If the driver detours, politely say "please take the main road". With a private transfer the fixed price never changes — even if the route is longer.

3. Fake VIP / Unlicensed Vehicle

People holding "VIP transfer" signs at the exit offer you a "luxury Mercedes"; the car may be unlicensed. The price they ask can be far above a fixed transfer fare, and the car is not tied to any booking.

Protection: Only pre-book with TÜRSAB-licensed agencies. Do not accept in-hall offers of "a car just for you". Official taxis are only at the official taxi rank.

4. Short-Changing / No Receipt

You hand over a large note and the driver says "no change", then keeps the difference. With no receipt, a complaint later is hard to make.

5. Currency / "Fake Note" Switch

You hand over a €100 note; the driver claims it is "fake" and swaps it with an old / counterfeit note, returning the bad note to you.

What is the safest transport from Istanbul Airport?▼

Are yellow taxis always scams?▼

No. Istanbul has thousands of honest taxi drivers. The problem is a small number of dishonest drivers concentrated around the airport targeting tourists. Where do I report a scam if it happens?▼

How risky is taking a taxi at night?▼

At night you are tired, you do not know the route, and there are fewer options at the exit, so watching the meter and the route matters even more.
